La cesta pesada

Un día, un chico tenía que llevar una cesta grande a su abuela.

One day, a boy had to take a large basket to his grandmother.

La cesta estaba llena y era muy pesada.

The basket was full and very heavy.

Su hermano pequeño Tom decidió ir con él.

His little brother Tom decided to go with him.

Los hermanos encontraron un palo largo y lo pusieron debajo del asa de la cesta.

The brothers found a long pole and put it under the handle of the basket.

Cada uno tomó un extremo del palo.

Each boy took one end of the pole.

Así fue mucho más fácil llevar la cesta.

This made the basket much easier to carry.

Por el camino, el hermano mayor miró la cesta y se quedó pensando.

On the way, the older brother looked at the basket and thought for a moment.

Si la movía más cerca de Tom, Tom tendría que llevar más peso.

If he moved it closer to Tom, Tom would have to carry more weight.

Y su propio lado sería mucho más ligero.

And his own side would become much lighter.

Tom era pequeño y quizá no lo notaría.

Tom was small and might not notice.

Pero el hermano mayor no quería engañarlo.

But the older brother did not want to trick him.

Movió la cesta en silencio hacia su propio extremo del palo.

He quietly moved the basket closer to his own end of the pole.

Ahora era más pesada para él y más ligera para Tom.

Now it was heavier for him and lighter for Tom.

Los hermanos continuaron el camino, y el hermano mayor sonreía.

The brothers continued on their way, and the older brother smiled.
