Les verbes pronominaux
Video transcript with translation
Bienvenue au 33ᵉ cours de LingTrio. Apprenons les verbes pronominaux en français !
Welcome to the 33rd LingTrio lesson. Let’s learn reflexive verbs!
Qu'est-ce qu'un verbe pronominal ?
What is a reflexive verb?
Un verbe pronominal est un verbe qui s'utilise avec un pronom réfléchi (me, te, se, nous, vous, se). Ce pronom indique que l'action est faite par le sujet sur lui-même.
A reflexive verb is a verb that is used with a reflexive pronoun (myself, yourself, himself, herself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves in English; me, te, se, nous, vous, se in other languages). This pronoun shows that the action is done by the subject to themselves.
En anglais, il n'existe pas d'équivalents exacts des verbes pronominaux, mais il y a des pronoms réfléchis qui indiquent une action dirigée vers soi-même (myself, yourself, himself, herself...).
In English, there is no exact equivalent of reflexive verbs, but there are reflexive pronouns that indicate an action directed at oneself (myself, yourself, himself, herself...).
En espagnol, il existe un équivalent complet des verbes pronominaux.
In Spanish, there is a full equivalent of reflexive verbs.
En russe, ce sont des verbes qui se terminent par "-ться" (t’sya).
In Russian, these are verbs that end with “-ться”.
Un verbe pronominal montre que l'action est effectuée par la personne elle-même sur elle-même. Par exemple, il se lave lui-même. Il se lave lui-même et non quelqu'un d'autre.
A reflexive verb shows that the action is performed by the person on themselves. For example: he washes himself. He washes himself, not someone else.
La conjugaison des verbes pronominaux
Conjugating reflexive verbs
Prenons l'exemple du verbe se laver (se laver les mains) au présent de l'indicatif :
Let’s take the verb “to wash oneself” (to wash one’s hands) in the present tense of the indicative:
Je me lave
I wash myself
Tu te laves
You wash yourself
Il / Elle / On se lave
He / She / It washes himself / herself
Nous nous lavons
We wash ourselves
Vous vous lavez
You wash yourselves
Ils / Elles se lavent
They wash themselves
Exemples de verbes pronominaux
Examples of reflexive verbs
Voici quelques verbes pronominaux courants :
Here are some common reflexive verbs:
Se lever, se coucher (aller au lit pour dormir), s'habiller (mettre des vêtements), se reposer (prendre une pause), se promener (marcher pour le plaisir)
To get up, to go to bed (to sleep), to get dressed (to put on clothes), to rest (to take a break), to go for a walk (to walk for pleasure)
La forme négative
Negative form
Pour mettre un verbe pronominal à la forme négative, on place ne avant le pronom et pas après le verbe :
To make a reflexive verb negative, place “not” after the auxiliary or use the negative form in English. In languages with pronoun placement rules, “ne” is placed before the pronoun and “pas” after the verb:
Je ne me lève pas.
I do not get up.
Nous ne nous reposons pas.
We do not rest.
Elles ne se promènent pas.
They do not go for a walk.
Les verbes pronominaux au passé composé
Reflexive verbs in the past tense
Au passé composé, on utilise l'auxiliaire être et on accorde le participe passé avec le sujet :
In the past tense, use the auxiliary verb “to be” in some languages, and agree the past participle with the subject:
Je me suis levé(e).
I got up.
Tu t'es reposé(e).
You rested.
Il s'est promené.
He went for a walk.
Elle s'est réveillée.
She woke up.
Nous nous sommes préparé(e)s.
We got ready.
Vous vous êtes couché(e)(s).
You went to bed.
Ils se sont rencontrés.
They met each other.
Elles se sont amusées.
They had fun.
Attention !
Note!
Elle s'est lavé les mains (pas d'accord car « les mains » est le COD).
She washed her hands (no agreement because “her hands” is the direct object).
