  1. ¡Hola, buenos días! Bienvenidos al curso de español de LingTrio.

Hello! Welcome to the LingTrio course.

  2. Hoy hablaremos del Condicional Compuesto de Indicativo, de sus formas y usos. También os contaré sobre el Infinitivo Compuesto. Y por último, veremos el vocabulario “La medicina”. ¿Os parece bien? Pues, ¡vamos allá!

Today we will talk about the Compound Conditional tense, its forms and uses. I will also explain the Compound Infinitive. And finally, we will study vocabulary on the topic “Medicine.” Ready? Then let’s begin!

  3. EL CONDICIONAL COMPUESTO DE INDICATIVO: SUS FORMAS Y USOS

THE COMPOUND CONDITIONAL: FORMS AND USES

  4. El Condicional Compuesto de Indicativo, al igual que el Condicional Simple, se utiliza para expresar recomendaciones, deseos, sugerencias o hipótesis, pero con una diferencia: se trata de los escenarios hipotéticos que ya no se pueden realizar.

The Compound Conditional, just like the Simple Conditional, is used to express advice, wishes, suggestions, or hypotheses, but with one difference: it refers to hypothetical situations that can no longer be realized.

  5. Vamos a ver cómo se forma. Para ello, tenemos que utilizar el verbo auxiliar haber, ponerlo en el Condicional Simple y luego añadirle… ¡eso es! ¡El participio!

How is it formed? We need to take the auxiliary verb “to have,” put it in the Simple Conditional form, and then add… exactly! The past participle of the main verb.

  6. Desayunar:

    To have breakfast:

  7. yo habría desayunado

    I would have had breakfast

  8. tú habrías desayunado

    you would have had breakfast

  9. él, ella, usted habría desayunado

he/she/you (formal) would have had breakfast

  10. nosotros, nosotras habríamos desayunado

    we would have had breakfast

  11. vosotros, vosotras habríais desayunado

you (plural) would have had breakfast

  12. ellos, ellas, ustedes habrían desayunado

they/you (plural, formal) would have had breakfast

  13. Vencer:

    To overcome:

  14. yo habría vencido

    I would have overcome

  15. tú habrías vencido

    you would have overcome

  16. él, ella, usted habría vencido

    he/she/you (formal) would have overcome

  17. nosotros, nosotras habríamos vencido

    we would have overcome

  18. vosotros, vosotras habríais vencido

    you (plural) would have overcome

  19. ellos, ellas, ustedes habrían vencido

they/you (plural, formal) would have overcome

  20. Insistir:

    To insist:

  21. yo habría insistido

    I would have insisted

  22. tú habrías insistido

    you would have insisted

  23. él, ella, usted habría insistido

    he/she/you (formal) would have insisted

  24. nosotros, nosotras habríamos insistido

    we would have insisted

  25. vosotros, vosotras habríais insistido

    you (plural) would have insisted

  26. ellos, ellas, ustedes habrían insistido

they/you (plural, formal) would have insisted

  27. Estas formas las vamos a usar para hacer una hipótesis sobre algo que podía haber ocurrido en el pasado, pero no ocurrió. Vamos a compararlo con el mismo tipo de frases, pero situadas en el presente:

These forms are used to make a hypothesis about something that could have happened in the past but didn’t. Let’s compare with the same type of sentence in the present:

  28. Si me dieras dinero, te compraría chuches.

If you gave me money, I would buy you candy.

  29. Si me hubieras dado dinero, te habría comprado chuches.

If you had given me money, I would have bought you candy.

  30. (“Chuches” = caramelos, chicles, snacks, etc.)

(“Candy” = sweets, chewing gum, snacks, etc.)

  31. Aquí vemos que, tratándose de la primera frase, el que habla aún puede conseguir lo deseado, porque se trata del presente. En cuanto a la segunda, el tiempo ya pasó, ahora ya no va a tener ese dinero ni comprar esos chuches.

Here we see that in the first case, the speaker can still achieve what they want because it refers to the present. In the second case, the time has already passed, and it’s no longer possible to get the money or buy the candy.

  32. Os pongo más ejemplos:

    More examples:

  33. Si hubieras venido antes, habrías comido con nosotros.

If you had come earlier, you would have eaten with us.

  34. Si hubieras leído este libro, te habrías dado cuenta de muchas cosas.

If you had read this book, you would have realized many things.

  35. Si hubieras gastado menos dinero durante el año, habrías podido permitirte unas vacaciones de lujo.

If you had spent less money during the year, you could have afforded a luxury vacation.

  36. Si hubiera esperado más, los vuelos me habrían salido más caros.

If I had waited longer, the flights would have been more expensive.

  37. Si hubiera reparado el tejado a tiempo, no habría tenido esta gotera.

If I had repaired the roof in time, I wouldn’t have had this leak.

  38. EL INFINITIVO COMPUESTO

    THE COMPOUND INFINITIVE

  39. El infinitivo compuesto también se forma a base del verbo auxiliar haber y el participio del verbo principal y expresa una acción terminada en el pasado. Se utiliza casi siempre para expresar arrepentimiento cuando algo pudo haber sido y no fue, o un reproche por algo que no sucedió y nos da pena o rabia. Mirad:

The Compound Infinitive is also formed with the auxiliary verb “to have” plus the past participle of the main verb. It expresses an action completed in the past. It is almost always used to express regret about something that could have happened but didn’t, or to reproach something that didn’t happen, which causes us annoyance or sadness. Look:

  40. Jorge no vino. Podía haber llamado, al menos.

Jorge didn’t come. He could have at least called.

  41. Tenía que haber ganado.

    He should have won.

  42. Ya podías haber avisado a tu madre de que no ibas a pasar a verla.

You could have told your mother you weren’t going to see her.

  43. Y también expresiones como:

    And also expressions like:

  44. – He suspendido el examen de mates. – ¡Hombre, haber estudiado mejor!

    – I failed my math exam. – Well, you should have studied more!

  45. – No he comprado nada, porque había cola. – Pero, ¡haber esperado!

    – I didn’t buy anything because there was a line. – But you should have waited!
