Difference between *imparfait* and *passé composé* The *imparfait* is used to describe background, habits or repeated actions in the past. It describes what was ongoing or continuous. The *passé composé*, on the other hand, expresses finished, precise, and often short actions in the past. It marks punctual events that move the story forward.
Some verbs have irregular roots in the *imparfait*, but the endings remain the same. For example: *Être*: J'étais Tu étais Il/Elle/On était Nous étions Vous étiez Ils/Elles étaient
Quand j'étais enfant, j'étais très timide.
When I was a child, I was very shy.
Special cases of verbs ending in -ger and -cer in the *imparfait* For verbs ending in -ger (like *manger*), we add an “e” before the endings -ais, -ait to keep the soft “g” sound: Je mangeais Tu mangeais Il / Elle / On mangeait Nous mangions Vous mangiez Ils / Elles mangeaient
Tu mangeais souvent chez ta grand-mère.
You often ate at your grandmother’s.
For verbs ending in -cer (like *commencer*), the “c” changes to “ç” before the endings -ais, -ait to keep the soft “c” sound: Je commençais Tu commençais Il / Elle / On commençait Nous commencions Vous commenciez Ils / Elles commençaient
