When do we use Future Continuous?

¿Cuándo usamos el futuro continuo?

We use the Future Continuous to talk about an action that:

Usamos el futuro continuo para hablar de una acción que:

1) Will happen in the future

1) Sucederá en el futuro

2) Will be in progress at a specific time

2) Estará en progreso en un momento específico

Structure

Estructura

Subject + will be + verb + ing

Sujeto + will be + verbo en -ing

I / you / we / they / he / she / it → will be → working, eating, sleeping...

Yo / tú / nosotros / vosotros / él / ella / ellos — will be — trabajar, comer, dormir...

Examples:

I will be working at 10 a.m.

Estaré trabajando a las 10 de la mañana.

She will be flying to Paris tomorrow morning.

Ella estará volando a París mañana por la mañana.

We will be watching a movie at 8 p.m.

Estaremos viendo una película a las 8 de la noche.

They will be sleeping when you arrive.

Ellos estarán durmiendo cuando llegues.

Future Continuous – Use it for:

Futuro continuo — se usa para:

1. Future action in progress at a specific time

1. Acción futura en progreso en un momento específico

We use Future Continuous when we want to describe an action that will be in progress at a particular moment in the future.

Usamos el futuro continuo cuando queremos describir una acción que estará en progreso en un momento determinado del futuro.

Examples:

Ejemplos:

I will be sleeping at 11 p.m. ➡ The action (sleeping) will already be happening at 11.

Estaré durmiendo a las 11 de la noche — la acción (dormir) ya estará ocurriendo en ese momento.

She will be working at 10 tomorrow. ➡ Not starting at 10 — already working.

Ella estará trabajando a las 10 mañana — no empezará a las 10, ya estará trabajando.

You usually say what time something will be happening: at 6 p.m., tomorrow morning, next week at this time, when you arrive.

Normalmente indicamos la hora exacta: a las 6 de la tarde, mañana por la mañana, la próxima semana a esta hora, cuando llegues.

2. Acción de fondo en el futuro

We also use Future Continuous to describe a background action — something already happening when another action happens in the future.

También usamos el futuro continuo para describir una acción de fondo — algo que ya estará ocurriendo cuando suceda otra acción en el futuro.

Examples:

Ejemplos:

I will be studying when you get home. ➡ I will already be in the middle of studying.

Estaré estudiando cuando llegues a casa — ya estaré en medio de mis estudios.

They will be traveling when the meeting starts. ➡ The traveling is the background situation.

Ellos estarán viajando cuando comience la reunión — el viaje es la acción de fondo.

Compare with Other Tenses

Present Continuous — I am eating. ➡ Action happening right now

Presente continuo — Estoy comiendo. (Acción en curso ahora)

Future Simple — I will eat at 6. ➡ One-time action in the future

Futuro simple — Comeré a las 6. (Acción única en el futuro)

Future Continuous — I will be eating at 6. ➡ Action in progress at 6

Futuro continuo — Estaré comiendo a las 6. (Acción en curso a las 6)

One situation, many tenses: "drive a car"

Una situación, varios tiempos: «conducir un coche»

Present Continuous — I am driving a car. ➡ I’m doing it now, in this moment.

Presente continuo — Estoy conduciendo un coche. (Ahora mismo)

Future Simple — I will drive a car tonight. ➡ I will do it later, one action.

Futuro simple — Conduciré un coche esta noche. (Más tarde, una sola acción)

Future Continuous — I will be driving a car at 8 p.m. ➡ At 8 p.m., I will already be in the middle of driving.

Futuro continuo — Estaré conduciendo un coche a las 8 de la noche. (A las 8 ya estaré conduciendo)

Past Simple — I drove a car yesterday. ➡ One action in the past. It's finished.

Pasado simple — Conduje un coche ayer. (Acción terminada en el pasado)

Past Continuous — I was driving a car when you called. ➡ I was in the middle of driving at that time.

Pasado continuo — Estaba conduciendo un coche cuando llamaste. (Acción en curso en ese momento)
