Spelling rules for -ing forms
📘 Reglas de ortografía para las formas en -ing
1. Basic rule
1. Regla básica
Simply add -ing to the verb:
Simplemente añade -ando (para verbos terminados en -ar) o -iendo (para verbos terminados en -er o -ir):
work → working
trabajar → trabajando
read → reading
leer → leyendo
play → playing
jugar → jugando
2. Verbs ending in -e
2. Verbos terminados en -e
If the verb ends with a silent -e, drop the -e before adding -ing:
En español no se elimina la vocal, simplemente se conjuga con la terminación correspondiente:
write → writing
hacer → haciendo
make → making
tener → teniendo
have → having
vivir → viviendo
3. One vowel + one consonant (doubling rule)
3. Consonante doble
If the verb is one syllable (or the stress is on the last syllable), and it ends in one vowel + one consonant, double the consonant:
En español no se duplican consonantes como en inglés, solo se mantiene la forma regular del gerundio:
run → running
correr → corriendo
sit → sitting
sentir → sintiendo
get → getting
empezar → empezando
begin → beginning
4. Verbos con cambios ortográficos
⚠ Exception: If the word ends with w, x, or y, do not double the consonant:
Algunos verbos cambian la raíz para mantener la pronunciación:
fix → fixing
decir → diciendo
snow → snowing
dormir → durmiendo
play → playing
pedir → pidiendo
4. Verbs ending in -ie
Change -ie to -y before adding -ing:
die → dying
lie → lying
tie → tying
