The story is about an old fisherman named Santiago. He lives near the sea and goes fishing every day.

One day Santiago goes far into the sea alone. He wants to catch a big fish.

After a long time a very big fish takes the line. Santiago fights with the fish for many days.

The old man is in pain, hungry, and tired. But he does not give up.

At last Santiago catches the big fish. He ties it to his boat and goes home.

On the way sharks come and eat the fish. Santiago fights them but loses the meat.

When Santiago comes back, only the bones of the fish stay.

The people see the big skeleton and respect the old man.

Santiago goes to sleep. The boy stays with him and wants to fish with him again.
