¡Hola, buenos días! Bienvenidos al curso de español de LingTrio.
Hello! Welcome to the LingTrio Spanish course.
¿Preparados? Pues, ¡vamos allá!
Today we are going to talk about reflexive and reciprocal verbs, which are used together with reflexive pronouns. And although it may sound serious, I assure you — it’s not complicated at all. You will also learn how to use the construction “Tener que + infinitive,” which is, of course, very useful. You will have a new vocabulary list to study, and this time it will be precisely the most basic reflexive and reciprocal verbs. Finally, we will talk a little about the agreement of adjectives with nouns of different genders. It’s going to be interesting! Ready? Then let’s get started!
LOS PRONOMBRES REFLEXIVOS
REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS
En el idioma español, al igual que en muchos otros, existen los pronombres reflexivos. Se utilizan junto con los verbos reflexivos y recíprocos para indicar que la acción recae sobre el sujeto que la realiza en el caso de los verbos reflexivos, y sobre los dos sujetos al mismo tiempo, si se trata de los verbos recíprocos.
In Spanish, as in many other languages, there are reflexive pronouns. They are used together with reflexive and reciprocal verbs to indicate that the action falls on the subject itself in the case of reflexive verbs, or on both subjects at the same time if it is a reciprocal verb.
Os pondré los pronombres reflexivos en pares con sus respectivos pronombres personales para que podáis identificarlos mejor:
I will list the reflexive pronouns in pairs with their corresponding personal pronouns so you can identify them more easily:
yo – me
I — me
tú – te
you — te
él, ella, usted – se
he, she, you (formal) — se
nosotros, nosotras – nos
we — nos
vosotros, vosotras – os
you (plural) — os
ellos, ellas, ustedes – se
they, you (plural formal) — se
LOS VERBOS REFLEXIVOS Y RECÍPROCOS
REFLEXIVE AND RECIPROCAL VERBS
Los verbos reflexivos y recíprocos terminan en la partícula “se” que coincide con el pronombre reflexivo de la 3ª persona del singular y del plural. Por ejemplo:
Reflexive and reciprocal verbs end in the particle “se,” which coincides with the reflexive pronoun of the 3rd person singular and plural. For example:
ducharse, vestirse, conocerse, encontrarse
to shower, to get dressed, to meet each other, to meet up
El propio significado de estos verbos ya nos indica que los dos primeros son reflexivos, y los otros dos son recíprocos. ¿Cómo se conjugan?
The meaning of these verbs already shows us that the first two are reflexive, and the last two are reciprocal. How do we conjugate them?
Para conjugarlos, tenemos que separar la partícula “se”, conjugar el verbo como otro cualquiera y añadir el pronombre reflexivo delante del verbo conjugado.
To conjugate them, we need to separate the particle “se,” conjugate the verb like any other, and place the corresponding reflexive pronoun in front of the conjugated verb.
Ejemplo: Vestirse
Example: to get dressed
yo me visto – tú te vistes – él/ella/usted se viste – nosotros/nosotras nos vestimos – vosotros/vosotras os vestís – ellos/ellas/ustedes se visten
I get dressed – you get dressed – he/she/you get(s) dressed – we get dressed – you (plural) get dressed – they/you (plural formal) get dressed
Ejemplo: Ducharse
Example: to shower
Yo me ducho todas las mañanas.
I shower every morning.
Jorge se ducha después del entrenamiento.
Jorge showers after training.
¿Te duchas o te bañas?
Do you shower or take a bath?
En verano, nos duchamos a menudo.
In summer, we shower often.
¿Vosotros os ducháis en el gimnasio o en casa?
Do you shower at the gym or at home?
Ellos se duchan después del trabajo.
They shower after work.
Ejemplos con verbos recíprocos: conocerse, encontrarse
Examples with reciprocal verbs: to know each other, to meet up
Maribel y yo nos conocemos toda la vida.
Maribel and I have known each other all our lives.
Estos niños se conocen porque van juntos al cole.
These children know each other because they go to school together.
