¡Hola, buenos días! Bienvenidos al curso de español de LingTrio.
Hello! Welcome to the LingTrio course.
Hoy estudiaremos los tres verbos que en Pretérito Imperfecto de Indicativo no se conjugan como el resto. También vamos a hablar del grado del adjetivo y os enseñaré a diferenciar los adverbios tan y tanto. ¿Preparados? ¡Estupendo, pues, vamos allá!
Today we will study three verbs that, in the Past Imperfect tense of the Indicative mood, are not conjugated like the others. We will also talk about the degrees of comparison of adjectives, and I will teach you how to distinguish between the adverbs tan and tanto. Ready? Great, then let's begin!
LOS VERBOS IRREGULARES EN PRETÉRITO IMPERFECTO DE INDICATIVO: IR, SER, VER
IRREGULAR VERBS IN THE PAST IMPERFECT TENSE OF THE INDICATIVE MOOD: IR, SER, VER
Para vosotros ya no es ningún secreto que los verbos ser e ir no se portan tan bien como el resto cuando los conjugamos. ¿Os acordáis de cómo eran sus formas en el Presente?
By now, it is no secret to you that the verbs ser (“to be”) and ir (“to go”) do not behave like the others when we conjugate them. Do you remember what their forms were in the Present tense?

Él, ella, usted es
He, she, you (formal) is

Pues ahora vamos a ver qué les pasa en Pretérito Imperfecto. Pero a estos dos vamos a añadirle esta vez el verbo ver. Fijaos en las tildes, por supuesto:
Now let’s see what happens to them in the Past Imperfect tense. This time, we will also add the verb ver (“to see”). Pay attention to the accent marks:

Y ahora vamos a comparar las frases en Presente con las de Pretérito Imperfecto:
Now let’s compare sentences in the Present tense with those in the Past Imperfect tense:
Yo soy guapo. → Yo era guapo.
I am handsome. → I was handsome.
A menudo vamos a la playa. → A menudo íbamos a la playa.
We often go to the beach. → We often went to the beach.
Sara ve muchas telenovelas. → Sara veía muchas telenovelas.
Sara watches many soap operas. → Sara used to watch many soap operas.
Somos jóvenes. → Éramos jóvenes.
We are young. → We were young.
¿Adónde vas tan cabizbajo? → ¿Adónde ibas tan cabizbajo?
Where are you going looking so downcast? → Where were you going looking so downcast?
EL GRADO DEL ADJETIVO
DEGREES OF COMPARISON OF ADJECTIVES
Y ahora vamos a ver lo del grado del adjetivo. Hasta ahora hemos hablado siempre de los adjetivos como tales: bonito, amarillo, interesante, etc. Se trataba del grado positivo de los adjetivos. Y hoy vamos a ver cómo se forman el grado comparativo y el grado superlativo.
Now let’s look at the degrees of comparison of adjectives. So far, we have talked about adjectives simply as words: beautiful, yellow, interesting, etc. This was the positive degree of adjectives. Today we will see how the comparative degree and the superlative degree are formed.
El grado comparativo El grado comparativo se forma mediante el adjetivo al que se le añade más o menos. Lo que obtenemos es esto:
Comparative degree The comparative degree is formed by adding more or less to the adjective. Here’s what we get:
más bonito — más caro — menos joven — menos aburrido — más fuerte
more beautiful — more expensive — less young — less boring — stronger
Los ejemplos que os he puesto son de adjetivos comparativos de superioridad o inferioridad. Pero también hay comparativos de igualdad, y se forman mediante tan:
The examples I have given you are comparative adjectives of superiority or inferiority. But there are also comparatives of equality, which are formed using as:
tan bonito como… — tan alta como… — tan difícil como…
as beautiful as… — as tall as… — as difficult as…
Vamos a ver qué frases podemos hacer con el grado comparativo del adjetivo:
Let’s see some sentences with the comparative degree of the adjective:
Este coche es más bonito que aquel, pero también es más caro.
This car is more beautiful than that one, but it is also more expensive.
Esta blusa es tan fina como la otra.
This blouse is as thin as the other one.
La piscina está menos fría que el mar.
The swimming pool is less cold than the sea.
El grado superlativo El grado superlativo se forma de dos maneras.
Superlative degree The superlative degree can be formed in two ways.
1) Añadiendo el más, la más, los más y las más:
1) Adding the most or the least:
Este edificio es el más alto.
This building is the tallest.
Esta sopa es la más rica.
This soup is the most delicious.
Estos niños son los más inteligentes.
These children are the most intelligent.
Estas películas son las más entretenidas.
These movies are the most entertaining.
2) Añadiendo sufijos ísimo, érrimo (muy raramente) o prefijos súper y extra:
2) Adding suffixes like -est, -most, or using prefixes like super- and extra-:
Este libro es buenísimo.
This book is excellent.
Este actor es celebérrimo.
This actor is world-famous.
Esta actriz es superfamosa.
This actress is super famous.
Esta tele es extracara.
This TV is extra expensive.
“TAN” Y “TANTO”
“TAN” AND “TANTO”
Y ahora hablamos brevemente de los adverbios tan y tanto. De los ejemplos que os puse cuando hablamos del grado comparativo de igualdad pudisteis ver que el tan se usa delante de los adjetivos. Y también delante de otros adverbios:
Now let’s briefly talk about the adverbs tan and tanto. From the examples we looked at when talking about the comparative degree of equality, you could see that tan is used before adjectives, and also before other adverbs:
Esta taza es tan bonita como la otra.
This cup is as beautiful as the other one.
Este niño escribe tan mal que no sé qué hacer con él.
This boy writes so badly that I don’t know what to do with him.
Y tanto (que funciona como adverbio o como adjetivo) se utiliza con los sustantivos y verbos:
And tanto (which can function as an adverb or as an adjective) is used with nouns and verbs:
No sé por qué tienes que trabajar tanto.
I don’t know why you have to work so much.
¿Cómo puedes comer tantos caramelos?
How can you eat so many candies?
