¡Hola, buenos días! Bienvenidos al curso de español de LingTrio.
Hello! Welcome to the LingTrio course.
Hoy hablaremos del gerundio y haremos formas verbales con “estar + gerundio” para hablar de cosas que están pasando ahora mismo, os comentaré los casos en los que podemos omitir el artículo y, por último, podréis aprender una lista de palabras “La oficina”. ¿Os parece bien? ¡Pues vamos a ponernos manos a la obra!
Today we will talk about the gerund and create verb forms with “estar + gerund” to talk about things that are happening right now. I will tell you about the cases where we can omit the article, and finally, you will learn a list of words on the topic “The Office”. Sounds good? Then let’s get started!
EL GERUNDIO: LAS FORMAS REGULARES E IRREGULARES
THE GERUND: REGULAR AND IRREGULAR FORMS
Vamos a comenzar por el gerundio. El gerundio es una forma no personal de verbos que se utiliza para hablar de una acción que se está realizando ahora mismo o junto con alguna otra. Mirad:
Let’s start with the gerund. The gerund is a non-personal verb form used to describe an action happening at the moment or together with another action. Look:
Me gusta comer leyendo las noticias en el móvil.
I like to eat while reading the news on my phone.
Antonio estaba corriendo y escuchando música.
Antonio was running and listening to music.
Paseando por esta calle me acuerdo de ti.
Walking down this street reminds me of you.
Para formar el gerundio, tenemos que quitar la terminación -ar a los verbos de la I conjugación y poner la terminación -ando, o quitar la terminación -er/-ir de los verbos de la II y III conjugación y poner la terminación -iendo/-yendo. Se hace de la siguiente manera:
To form the gerund, we remove the ending -ar from verbs of the first conjugation and add the ending -ando, or remove the ending -er/-ir from verbs of the second and third conjugations and add the ending -iendo/-yendo. Here’s how it works:
cantar - cantando
to sing – cantando
llevar - llevando
to carry – llevando
tomar - tomando
to take – tomando
tener - teniendo
to have – teniendo
conocer - conociendo
to know – conociendo
aprender - aprendiendo
to learn – aprendiendo
aplaudir - aplaudiendo
to applaud – aplaudiendo
abrir - abriendo
to open – abriendo
salir - saliendo
to go out – saliendo
Pero, por supuesto, que todo esto son formas regulares. También las hay irregulares y voy a dejaros una pequeña lista de ellas:
But of course, these are regular forms. There are also irregular ones, and here is a small list:
decir - diciendo
to say – diciendo
pedir - pidiendo
to ask – pidiendo
sentir - sintiendo
to feel – sintiendo
ser - siendo
to be – siendo
repetir - repitiendo
to repeat – repitiendo
dormir - durmiendo
to sleep – durmiendo
morir - muriendo
to die – muriendo
poder - pudiendo
to be able to – pudiendo
oír - oyendo
to hear – oyendo
traer - trayendo
to bring – trayendo
creer - creyendo
to believe – creyendo
caer - cayendo
to fall – cayendo
venir - viniendo
to come – viniendo
servir - sirviendo
to serve – sirviendo
leer - leyendo
to read – leyendo
El gerundio del verbo “ir” es: yendo
The gerund of the verb “to go” is: yendo.
“ESTAR + GERUNDIO”
“ESTAR + GERUND”
Mientras que en el idioma inglés existe Present Continuous (is/are + ing) que se utiliza para hablar de algo que se realiza ahora mismo, en el idioma español lo mismo se hace mediante el uso del verbo estar con gerundio. Se hace de la siguiente manera:
In English, there is the Present Continuous (is/are + ing), which is used to talk about something happening right now. In Spanish, the same is expressed using the verb estar with the gerund. Here’s how it works:
estoy hablando
I am speaking – estoy hablando
estás escuchando
you are listening – estás escuchando
está comiendo
he/she is eating – está comiendo
estamos estudiando
we are studying – estamos estudiando
estáis leyendo
you (plural) are reading – estáis leyendo
están durmiendo
they are sleeping – están durmiendo
Y vamos a hacer oraciones con esta construcción:
Examples of sentences with this construction:
Elisa está haciendo un buen trabajo.
Elisa is doing a good job.
Estamos preparando una paella.
We are preparing a paella.
Yo estoy cenando, ¿y tú? ¿Qué estás haciendo?
I am having dinner, and you? What are you doing?
Ellos están tomando el sol en la playa.
They are sunbathing on the beach.
No me estás escuchando.
You are not listening to me.
Una construcción como esta se llama perífrasis verbal y no es la única que existe en el idioma. Las otras perífrasis verbales vamos a verlas un poco más adelante.
This kind of construction is called a verbal periphrasis, and it is not the only one in the language. We will study the other verbal periphrases later.
