BOTH – Two Together

BOTH – Оба, обе

Meaning: two things/people together

Значение: два предмета или человека вместе

Examples:

Both cats are sleeping.

Обе кошки спят.

Both of my brothers live in Paris.

Оба моих брата живут в Париже.

I like both ice cream and cake.

Я люблю и мороженое, и торт.

When do we use "both" and when "both of"?

Когда использовать "both", а когда "both of"?

Use "both of" when the noun has:

Мы используем "both of", когда существительное имеет:

an article (the),

артикль (the),

a possessive adjective (my, your, their),

притяжательное прилагательное (my, your, their),

a demonstrative adjective (these, those),

or when you use a pronoun (us, them, you).

Both of the cats are sleeping.

EITHER – One or the Other

EITHER – Один из двух

Meaning: one of the two choices

Structure:

Either + noun

Either of + the/my/these/your + noun/pronoun

Either of + the/my/these/your + существительное/местоимение

Examples:

Примеры:

You can take either bus.

Ты можешь поехать на любом из двух автобусов.

Meaning: You can choose one bus or the other.

Значение: можно выбрать один автобус или другой.

Both options are available, but you choose only one.

Оба варианта доступны, но выбираешь только один.

You don't take both buses — you choose one of them.

Нельзя поехать на обоих автобусах — выбираешь один из них.

Either of these keys will open the door.

Любой из этих ключей откроет дверь.

I don’t like either option. (I like none of them.)

Мне не нравится ни один из вариантов. (Не нравится ни один.)

NEITHER – Not This and Not That

NEITHER – Ни тот, ни другой

Meaning: not one and not the other

Значение: ни один из двух

Structure:

Neither + noun

Neither of + the/my/these/your + noun/pronoun

Neither of + the/my/these/your + существительное/местоимение

Examples:

Neither restaurant is open now.

Neither of my parents speaks French.

I like neither coffee nor tea. (I don't like coffee and I don't like tea.)

What is "Nor"?

Что такое "nor"?

"Nor" is used to connect two negative ideas.

"Nor" используется, чтобы соединить две отрицательные идеи.

It means "not this and not that."

Означает «ни то, ни другое».

How do we use "nor"?

Как мы используем "nor"?

After a negative sentence (usually with neither)

После отрицательного предложения (обычно с neither)

To continue a negative idea without repeating "not"

1. Neither...nor... (Most common)

Neither my mother nor my father speaks Spanish. (= My mother does not speak Spanish. My father does not speak Spanish.)

Ни моя мать, ни мой отец не говорят по-испански. (= Моя мать не говорит по-испански. Мой отец не говорит по-испански.)

She neither sings nor dances.

Она ни поёт, ни танцует.

2. Nor at the beginning (formal)

I don’t like pizza. Nor do I like hamburgers. (= I don't like pizza. I also don't like hamburgers.)

Мне не нравится пицца. И гамбургеры тоже не нравятся. (= Мне не нравится пицца. Также мне не нравятся гамбургеры.)

Use "neither" when both options are negative.

Используйте "neither", когда оба варианта отрицательные.
