A Day Between Work and Study

Me despierto a las 6:30, cuando la ciudad apenas empieza a cobrar vida.

I wake up at 6:30, when the city is just starting to come alive.

Mi ritual matutino es una taza de té verde y leer las noticias en un idioma extranjero. Es mi manera de aprender palabras nuevas sin libro de texto.

My morning ritual is a cup of green tea and reading the news in a foreign language. It’s my way of learning new words without a textbook.

Hoy en el trabajo tenemos una reunión con un cliente de Japón, así que repaso algunas frases en japonés para causar una buena impresión.

Today at work we have a meeting with a client from Japan, so I review a few Japanese phrases to make a good impression.

Recientemente aprendí que en Japón siempre se recibe una tarjeta de presentación con ambas manos y se lee con atención antes de guardarla — es una señal de respeto.

I recently learned that in Japan, you always receive a business card with both hands and read it carefully before putting it away — it’s a sign of respect.

En el metro escucho un pódcast sobre cómo planificar el tiempo de manera eficaz. Resulta que la regla «25 minutos de trabajo — 5 minutos de descanso» realmente ayuda a concentrarse.

On the subway, I listen to a podcast about how to plan time effectively. It turns out the “25 minutes work — 5 minutes rest” rule really helps with concentration.

En la oficina muestro la presentación al cliente, y sonríe al oír mi «おはようございます» — «Buenos días» en japonés.

At the office, I show the client the presentation, and he smiles when he hears my “おはようございます” — “Good morning” in Japanese.

Después del trabajo voy a la biblioteca a una clase nocturna de psicología. Hoy hablamos de por qué las personas recuerdan mejor la información cuando la explican a otros.

After work, I go to the library for an evening psychology lecture. Today we discuss why people remember information better when they explain it to others.

Creo que esto se puede aplicar tanto a mi trabajo como al aprendizaje de idiomas.

I think this can be applied both to my job and to learning languages.

Vuelvo a casa tarde, pero siento que cada día puede ser útil si buscas algo nuevo en él.

I come home late, but I feel that every day can be useful if you look for something new in it.
