  1. ¡Hola, buenos días! Bienvenidos al curso de español de LingTrio.

Hello! Good morning! Welcome to the LingTrio Spanish course.

  2. Hoy hablaremos del Modo Subjuntivo, os comentaré sus usos más básicos, luego empezaremos a utilizar el Presente de Subjuntivo y para ello vamos a ver las formas de subjuntivo de los verbos de la I conjugación. ¡Va a ser entretenido! ¡Venga, vamos allá!

Today we will talk about the subjunctive mood, go over its most basic uses, then start using the present tense of the subjunctive, and for this we will look at the subjunctive forms of verbs of the first conjugation. It’s going to be interesting! So, let’s get started!

  3. EL MODO SUBJUNTIVO: USOS MÁS BÁSICOS

    THE SUBJUNCTIVE MOOD: BASIC USES

  4. Hasta ahora hemos estado viendo el Modo Indicativo que existe en muchas lenguas indoeuropeas y se utiliza para hablar de los hechos que han ocurrido o van a ocurrir. Y a partir de hoy, vamos a estudiar el Modo Subjuntivo que no es tan característico para las lenguas indoeuropeas, pero sí que lo vamos a encontrar en las lenguas romances como el italiano, el portugués o el francés.

Up until now, we have been studying the indicative mood, which exists in many Indo-European languages and is used to talk about facts that have already happened or will happen. Starting today, we will study the subjunctive mood, which is less typical for Indo-European languages, but is found in Romance languages such as Italian, Portuguese, and French.

  5. El Modo Subjuntivo se usa sobre todo en las frases subordinadas y nos permite expresar deseos, órdenes, la posibilidad de que algo ocurra o nuestra opinión. Por ejemplo:

The subjunctive mood is mainly used in subordinate clauses and allows us to express wishes, orders, the possibility that something may happen, or opinions. Examples:

  6. Quiero que te compres este vestido.

I want you to buy this dress.

  7. Te pido que me llames a las ocho.

I ask you to call me at eight.

  8. Espero que Ramón llegue a tiempo.

I hope Ramon arrives on time.

  9. No estoy seguro de que apruebes este examen.

I’m not sure you will pass this exam.

  10. Dentro del Modo Subjuntivo hay cuatro tiempos verbales y los iremos viendo poco a poco empezando por el Presente de Subjuntivo.

In the subjunctive mood there are four tenses, and we will study them gradually, starting with the present subjunctive.

  11. EL PRESENTE DE SUBJUNTIVO DE LOS VERBOS DE I CONJUGACIÓN

THE PRESENT SUBJUNCTIVE OF FIRST CONJUGATION VERBS

  12. El Presente de Subjuntivo expresa una acción que se está realizando junto con otra acción (que es el predicado de la frase principal) o después de que se realice la primera.

The present subjunctive expresses an action that happens at the same time as another action (which is the predicate of the main clause) or after the first action is completed.

  13. Mi madre quiere que vuelva a las diez.

My mother wants me to come back at ten.

  14. Prefiero que cocines tú.

    I prefer that you cook.

  15. El Presente de Subjuntivo de los verbos de la I conjugación se forma a base de los verbos en infinitivo mediante las siguientes terminaciones:

The present subjunctive of first conjugation verbs is formed from the infinitive by adding the following endings:

  16. -e, -es, -e, -emos, -éis, -en

-e, -es, -e, -emos, -éis, -en

  17. Tomar: que yo tome que tú tomes que él, ella, usted tome que nosotros, nosotras tomemos que vosotros, vosotras toméis que ellos, ellas, ustedes tomen

Example with the verb “to take”: that I take that you take that he/she/you (formal) take that we take that you (plural) take that they/you (formal plural) take

  18. Comprar: que yo compre que tú compres que él, ella, usted compre que nosotros, nosotras compremos que vosotros, vosotras compréis que ellos, ellas, ustedes compren

Example with the verb “to buy”: that I buy that you buy that he/she/you (formal) buy that we buy that you (plural) buy that they/you (formal plural) buy

  19. “QUIERO QUE + EL SUBJUNTIVO”

“I WANT YOU TO + SUBJUNCTIVE”

  20. Y ahora que ya sabemos cómo son las formas del Presente de Subjuntivo de los verbos de I conjugación, vamos a ver su uso más básico. Si queremos pedirle algo a alguien y se lo decimos directamente, la estructura va a ser la siguiente:

Now that we know the forms of the present subjunctive of first conjugation verbs, let’s look at its most basic use. If we want to ask someone to do something directly, the structure will be:

  21. Quiero que + el Presente de Subjuntivo

I want you to + verb in the present subjunctive

  22. Por ejemplo:

    Examples:

  23. yo quiero que descanses ella quiere que desayunes tú quieres que ganen nosotros queremos que estudies vosotros queréis que viaje ellos quieren que continúe

I want you to rest She wants you to have breakfast You want them to win We want you to study You (plural) want him to travel They want him to continue

  24. Y ahora vamos a hacer unas frases completas con esta estructura:

    Examples in complete sentences:

  25. Mónica quiere que bailes con ella.

Monica wants you to dance with her.

  26. Mi madre quiere que cenéis con nosotros.

My mother wants you (plural) to have dinner with us.

  27. Sergio y Miguel quieren que gane su equipo favorito.

Sergio and Miguel want their favourite team to win.

  28. ¿Quieres que cocine algo especial?

Do you want me to cook something special?

  29. Queremos que gastes menos dinero.

We want you to spend less money.

  30. Y si hacemos una frase negativa, pasará lo mismo:

In negative sentences, the structure is the same:

  31. No quiero que pienses de esta manera.

I don’t want you to think this way.

  32. No queremos que estés triste.

We don’t want you to be sad.

  33. Mis padres no quieren que hable contigo.

My parents don’t want me to talk to you.
