Hello, good morning! Welcome to the LingTrio course.

Today we are going to finish talking about the exceptions in the Present Subjunctive and we will look at the verbs that have irregular forms in this tense. We will also talk about the use of the subjunctive in impersonal sentences. Sounds good? Then let’s get started!

  3. LAS EXCEPCIONES DE PRESENTE DEL SUBJUNTIVO: CONJUGACIÓN IRREGULAR

EXCEPTIONS IN THE PRESENT SUBJUNCTIVE: IRREGULAR CONJUGATION

  4. Hasta ahora, además de utilizar verbos regulares en Presente de Subjuntivo, hemos practicado frases con aquellos verbos que tienen alteraciones vocálicas o permutación de consonantes. Y hoy vamos a ver los verbos que en Presente de Subjuntivo tienen formas irregulares. Estas formas hay que aprenderlas.

Up until now, in addition to using regular verbs in the Present Subjunctive, we have practiced sentences with those verbs that have vowel changes or consonant shifts. Today we will look at verbs that, in the Present Subjunctive, have irregular forms. These forms must be memorized.

To see: that I see that you see that he/she/you (formal) see that we see that you (plural) see that they see

  9. Haber: que yo haya que tú hayas que él, ella, usted haya que nosotros, nosotras hayamos que vosotros, vosotras hayáis que ellos, ellas, ustedes hayan

  10. Dar: que yo dé que tú des que él, ella, usted dé que nosotros, nosotras demos que vosotros, vosotras deis que ellos, ellas, ustedes den

To give: that I give that you give that he/she/you (formal) give that we give that you (plural) give that they give

  11. Ir: que yo vaya que tú vayas que él, ella, usted vaya que nosotros, nosotras vayamos que vosotros, vosotras vayáis que ellos, ellas, ustedes vayan

To go: that I go that you go that he/she/you (formal) go that we go that you (plural) go that they go

  12. Decir: que yo diga que tú digas que él, ella, usted diga que nosotros, nosotras digamos que vosotros, vosotras digáis que ellos, ellas, ustedes digan

To say: that I say that you say that he/she/you (formal) say that we say that you (plural) say that they say

  13. Tener (nota: los verbos venir y salir se conjugan igual): que yo tenga que tú tengas que él, ella, usted tenga que nosotros, nosotras tengamos que vosotros, vosotras tengáis que ellos, ellas, ustedes tengan

To have (tener) (note: the verbs “to come” and “to go out” are conjugated the same way): that I have that you have that he/she/you (formal) have that we have that you (plural) have that they have

  14. Vamos a hacer frases con estos verbos. Fijaos en los usos de subjuntivo que ya hemos comentado:

Let’s make sentences with these verbs. Notice the uses of the subjunctive that we have already discussed:

  15. Quiero que seas responsable de tus actos.

I want you to be responsible for your actions.

  16. Posiblemente, Martina esté cansada después del entrenamiento.

  23. También me gustaría comentaros que la locución adverbial “a lo mejor” no requiere el subjuntivo. Mirad:

I would also like to point out that the adverbial phrase “maybe” (a lo mejor) does not require the subjunctive. Look:

  24. A lo mejor tenemos que irnos antes de que termine el concierto.

Maybe we have to leave before the concert ends.

  25. EL SUBJUNTIVO EN LAS ORACIONES IMPERSONALES

    THE SUBJUNCTIVE IN IMPERSONAL SENTENCES

  26. Las oraciones impersonales son aquellas que no tienen sujeto. Algunas de ellas (las que requieren el uso de subjuntivo) son las siguientes:

It is important that… It is possible that… It is impossible that… It is probable that… It is necessary that… It is strange that…

  28. Y ahora las completamos. Por ejemplo:

Now let’s complete them. For example:

  29. Es importante que vengas mañana a la conferencia.

It is important that you come to the conference tomorrow.
