Video transcript with translation
Hello! Welcome to the Spanish course from LingTrio. Today we are going to talk about the use of the subjunctive in temporal clauses with their connectors, which you may already know from other lessons. We will also start using the future of probability. Ready? Let’s go!
EL USO DEL SUBJUNTIVO EN ORACIONES TEMPORALES
THE USE OF THE SUBJUNCTIVE IN TEMPORAL CLAUSES
When we talk about an action and mention the moment when it happened, we use a temporal clause with some very common connectors for this type of sentence. For example:
as soon as – once – whenever – until – before – after
Mirad:
Almost all these connectors can be used with the Indicative Mood when it is a matter of actions that happened in the past or are happening in the present. Look:
Me llamó tan pronto como llegó a Palencia.
He called me as soon as he arrived in Palencia.
Whenever I go to Córdoba, I book a hotel with a swimming pool.
As soon as I realized I couldn’t keep the promise I made to Hugo, I told him.
After he learned the result of the exam, he stopped talking to us.
I worked in this company until I understood it was a scam.
But if the actions we are talking about are going to happen in the future and are simultaneous, we must use the Present Subjunctive:
Tan pronto como llegues a Palencia, llámame.
As soon as you arrive in Palencia, call me.
Whenever I go to Córdoba, I will book a hotel with a swimming pool.
As soon as I realize it is a scam, I will quit.
I will keep eating until I can’t anymore.
You have to go back home before it gets dark.
After you finish washing, dry the dishes.
When both actions are going to happen in the future but not simultaneously — one precedes the other — we use the Present Perfect Subjunctive:
Tan pronto como haya cenado, saldré a buscarte.
As soon as I have had dinner, I will go out to look for you.
Whenever we have consulted a doctor first, we can start taking medicine.
As soon as you have sent me the photos, I will gladly comment on them.
After you have finished watching the movie, we will go out for a drink.
You cannot solve a problem before it has appeared.
EL FUTURO DE PROBABILIDAD
THE FUTURE OF PROBABILITY
By using the forms of the Simple Future, we can not only talk about things that will happen in the future, but also express our doubt or probability about them. For example:
– ¿Dónde está tu hermano? – No sé, estará por ahí.
– Where is your brother? – I don’t know, he will be around.
By saying “he will be” in this sentence, we are not saying that “he will be around later,” but supposing that “he is probably around” right now.
– ¿Qué hora es? – Uf, pues, serán las dos. O las tres.
– What time is it? – Ugh, well, it will be two o’clock. Or three.
In this case it is the same. It’s not that it “will be two or three o’clock later,” but that we think it is probably two or three o’clock right now.
And now let’s make more sentences of the same type. Note: all these forms of the Simple Future express probability, not that the things mentioned will necessarily happen in the future:
You will want to go on a little trip somewhere, right?
Right now Miguel will be saving everything he can, poor guy.
If he reads this book in the original, he will really know the language.
Lucía will be very pretty, but she is not intelligent at all.
– ¿Tu tutora sólo ha llamado a tus padres? – Hombre, llamará a todos.
– Did your tutor only call your parents? – Well, she will call everyone.
– María nos ha pagado la cena. – Claro, tendrá dinero.
– María paid for our dinner. – Of course, she must have money.
