EL CONDICIONAL SIMPLE DE INDICATIVO: SUS FORMAS Y USOS
THE SIMPLE CONDITIONAL: FORMS AND USES
Vamos a comenzar por Condicional Simple de Indicativo. Se trata de un tiempo del Modo Indicativo que se utiliza para expresar recomendaciones, deseos, sugerencias o hipótesis. Su nombre ya nos indica que se trata de una condición necesaria para que se produjera una u otra acción. Pero, antes que nada, vamos a ver cómo se forma.
Let’s start with the Simple Conditional. It is a tense of the Indicative Mood that is used to express advice, wishes, suggestions, or hypotheses. Its name already suggests that it refers to a necessary condition for one action or another to happen. But first, let’s see how it is formed.
Para conjugar los verbos en Condicional Simple, tenemos que añadir terminaciones al mismo infinitivo del verbo. Y van a ser estas:
To conjugate verbs in the Simple Conditional, we add endings to the infinitive of the verb. These endings are:
–ía –ías –ía –íamos –íais –ían
–ía –ías –ía –íamos –íais –ían
Tomar:
Example “to take”:
yo tomaría
I would take
tú tomarías
you would take
él, ella, usted tomaría
he/she/you (formal) would take
nosotros, nosotras tomaríamos
we would take
vosotros, vosotras tomaríais
you (plural) would take
ellos, ellas, ustedes tomarían
they/you (plural formal) would take
Crecer:
Example “to grow”:
yo crecería
I would grow
tú crecerías
you would grow
él, ella, usted crecería
he/she/you (formal) would grow
nosotros, nosotras creceríamos
we would grow
vosotros, vosotras creceríais
you (plural) would grow
ellos, ellas, ustedes crecerían
they/you (plural formal) would grow
Vivir:
Example “to live”:
yo viviría
I would live
tú vivirías
you would live
él, ella, usted viviría
he/she/you (formal) would live
nosotros, nosotras viviríamos
we would live
vosotros, vosotras viviríais
you (plural) would live
ellos, ellas, ustedes vivirían
they/you (plural formal) would live
En cuanto a sus usos, son los siguientes:
The uses of the Simple Conditional are the following:
1. Para recomendar algo:
1. To give advice:
Yo que tú preguntaría al jefe sobre las vacaciones.
If I were you, I would ask the boss about the vacation.
Creo que deberías pasar por una farmacia.
I think you should stop by a pharmacy.
2. Para expresar un deseo de que algo ocurra en presente o en futuro:
2. To express a wish for something to happen in the present or future:
Ahora mismo me tomaría un zumo bien fresquito.
Right now, I would drink a nice fresh juice.
Viajaríamos por todo el mundo, sería estupendo.
We would travel around the whole world, it would be wonderful.
3. Para expresar una hipótesis:
3. To express a hypothesis:
Se lo comentaría a mi madre.
I would tell my mother about it.
Creo que podría hacerlo.
I think I could do it.
LA CONJUGACIÓN DE LOS VERBOS IRREGULARES EN CONDICIONAL SIMPLE DE INDICATIVO
CONJUGATION OF IRREGULAR VERBS IN THE SIMPLE CONDITIONAL
Los verbos que son irregulares en Condicional Simple, también lo son en Futuro Simple. Comparad:
The verbs that are irregular in the Simple Conditional are the same ones that are irregular in the Simple Future. Compare:
yo tendré – yo tendría
I will have – I would have
yo pondré – yo pondría
I will put – I would put
yo saldré – yo saldría
I will go out – I would go out
yo habré – yo habría
I will have (auxiliary) – I would have (auxiliary)
yo querré – yo querría
I will want – I would want
yo sabré – yo sabría
I will know – I would know
Con lo cual, si ya domináis el Futuro Simple de Indicativo, no tendréis ningún problema a la hora de formar el Condicional Simple. En los ejemplos que acabáis de ver, en unos verbos aparece una –d delante de la terminación, y en otros, se pierde la vocal –e.
So, if you already master the Simple Future Indicative, you won’t have any problem forming the Simple Conditional. In some verbs, a “d” appears before the ending, and in others, the vowel “e” is dropped.
Pero también tenemos dos verbos cuya raíz es irregular tanto en el Futuro Simple como en el Condicional Simple de Indicativo. Son los verbos “decir” y “hacer”:
But we also have two verbs whose stem is irregular both in the Simple Future and in the Simple Conditional. These are the verbs “to say” and “to do”:
Decir:
Example “to say”:
yo diría
I would say
tú dirías
you would say
él, ella, usted diría
he/she/you (formal) would say
nosotros, nosotras diríamos
we would say
vosotros, vosotras diríais
you (plural) would say
ellos, ellas, ustedes dirían
they/you (plural formal) would say
Hacer:
Example “to do”:
yo haría
I would do
tú harías
you would do
él, ella, usted haría
he/she/you (formal) would do
nosotros, nosotras haríamos
we would do
vosotros, vosotras haríais
you (plural) would do
ellos, ellas, ustedes harían
they/you (plural formal) would do
EL USO DEL CONDICIONAL SIMPLE EN ORACIONES CONDICIONALES POTENCIALES
THE USE OF THE SIMPLE CONDITIONAL IN POTENTIAL CONDITIONAL SENTENCES
Las oraciones condicionales potenciales tratan de un presente o un futuro hipotético. En este caso, el verbo en la oración principal va en Pretérito Imperfecto de Subjuntivo, y el verbo en la oración subordinada, en Condicional Simple. Por ejemplo:
Potential conditional sentences refer to a hypothetical present or future. In this case, the verb in the main clause is in the Past Imperfect Subjunctive, while the verb in the subordinate clause is in the Simple Conditional. For example:
Si tuviera dinero, me compraría el último modelo de Lexus.
If I had money, I would buy the latest Lexus model.
Si desayunarais en casa, os haría unas tortitas.
If you had breakfast at home, I would make you pancakes.
Si durmieras más horas, te sentirías mejor.
If you slept more hours, you would feel better.
Si pudiera, me pasaría todo el verano en el pueblo.
If I could, I would spend the whole summer in the village.
Si se esforzaran un poco, prepararían de sobra este examen.
If they made a little effort, they would easily prepare for this exam.
