Video transcript with translation
¡Hola, buenos días! Bienvenidos al curso de español de LingTrio.
Hello! Welcome to the Spanish course from LingTrio.
Hoy hablaremos de los verbos cuyas formas en el Pretérito Imperfecto de Subjuntivo son irregulares. También os enseñaré los usos del Pretérito Imperfecto de Subjuntivo después de “como si”, “me gustaría” y “querría”. Por último, os comentaré el uso de la palabra “junto”. ¿Os parece bien? Entonces, empezamos.
Today we will talk about verbs whose forms in the Past Imperfect Subjunctive are irregular. I will also show you the uses of the Past Imperfect Subjunctive after “as if,” “I would like,” and “I would want.” Finally, we will look at the use of the word “junto.” Sounds good? Then let’s get started.
LOS VERBOS IRREGULARES EN EL PRETÉRITO IMPERFECTO DE SUBJUNTIVO
IRREGULAR VERBS IN THE PAST IMPERFECT SUBJUNCTIVE
Los verbos que en el Pretérito Imperfecto de Subjuntivo se conjugan de una manera diferente al resto son los mismos que tenían sus permutaciones en Pretérito Simple de Indicativo. Por ejemplo:
The verbs that conjugate differently in the Past Imperfect Subjunctive are the same ones that had irregular forms in the Past Simple Indicative. For example:
Poder:
Verb “can”:
que yo pudiera/pudiese
that I could
que tú pudieras/pudieses
that you could
que él, ella, usted pudiera/pudiese
that he/she/you (formal) could
que nosotros, nosotras pudiéramos/pudiésemos
that we could
que vosotros, vosotras pudierais/pudieseis
that you (plural) could
que ellos, ellas, ustedes pudieran/pudiesen
that they/you (plural formal) could
Estar:
Verb “to be” (state):
que yo estuviera/estuviese
that I were
que tú estuvieras/estuvieses
that you were
que él, ella, usted estuviera/estuviese
that he/she/you (formal) were
que nosotros, nosotras estuviéramos/estuviésemos
that we were
que vosotros, vosotras estuvierais/estuvieseis
that you (plural) were
que ellos, ellas, ustedes estuvieran/estuviesen
that they/you (plural formal) were
Ser:
Verb “to be” (identity/essence):
que yo fuera/fuese
that I were
que tú fueras/fueses
that you were
que él, ella, usted fuera/fuese
that he/she/you (formal) were
que nosotros, nosotras fuéramos/fuésemos
that we were
que vosotros, vosotras fuérais/fuéseis
that you (plural) were
que ellos, ellas, ustedes fueran/fuesen
that they/you (plural formal) were
Haber:
Verb “to have”:
que yo hubiera/hubiese
that I had
que tú hubieras/hubieses
that you had
que él, ella, usted hubiera/hubiese
that he/she/you (formal) had
que nosotros, nosotras hubiéramos/hubiésemos
that we had
que vosotros, vosotras hubierais/hubieseis
that you (plural) had
que ellos, ellas, ustedes hubieran/hubiesen
that they/you (plural formal) had
El resto de los verbos irregulares los podéis conjugar vosotros mismos recordando sus conjugaciones en el Pretérito Simple de Indicativo.
The rest of the irregular verbs can be conjugated by remembering their forms in the Past Simple Indicative.
LOS USOS DEL PRETÉRITO IMPERFECTO DE SUBJUNTIVO DESPUÉS DE “COMO SI”, “ME GUSTARÍA” Y “QUERRÍA”
USES OF THE PAST IMPERFECT SUBJUNCTIVE AFTER “AS IF,” “I WOULD LIKE,” AND “I WOULD WANT”
Si a la hora de hablar de una acción queremos compararla con algo hipotético, podemos recurrir al Pretérito Imperfecto de Subjuntivo y a la estructura “como si”. Mirad:
If we want to compare an action to something hypothetical, we use the Past Imperfect Subjunctive with the structure “as if.” For example:
Ana está tan contenta como si estuviera de descanso.
Anna looks as happy as if she were on vacation.
Este chico habla tan bien el castellano como si fuera español.
This boy speaks Spanish as if he were a native.
Víctor gasta tanto dinero como si fuera un millonario.
Victor spends money as if he were a millionaire.
Hablas con tanta prepotencia como si fueras el más sabio del mundo.
You speak with such arrogance as if you were the wisest person in the world.
Este café está tan amargo como si no llevara nada de azúcar.
This coffee tastes as bitter as if it had no sugar at all.
Otro uso que me gustaría comentaros es el de poner el verbo en el Pretérito Imperfecto de Subjuntivo en la frase subordinada, cuando en la oración principal tenemos lo de “me gustaría” o “querría”. Son formas del Condicional Simple del que ya hablaremos en las próximas lecciones, pero por ahora os propongo aprender a usar estas dos formas, muy habituales en el lenguaje hablado:
Another use I’d like to show you is when the verb in the subordinate clause is in the Past Imperfect Subjunctive, while the main clause contains “I would like” or “I would want.” These are forms of the Simple Conditional, which we’ll study in later lessons, but for now let’s learn to use these two, as they are very common in spoken language:
Me gustaría que hablaramos más a menudo.
I would like us to talk more often.
Querría que me tradujeras este texto.
I would want you to translate this text for me.
Nos gustaría que un día nos invitaras a tu boda.
We would like you to invite us to your wedding one day.
¿No querrías que te ayudáramos en todo?
Wouldn’t you want us to help you with everything?
Ya sé que te gustaría que te regalara algo más.
I know you would like me to give you another gift.
EL USO DE LA PALABRA “JUNTO”
THE USE OF THE WORD “JUNTO”
La palabra “junto” puede figurar como adverbio si se utiliza con las preposiciones “con” o “a”, y entonces no cambia de forma, y también se usa como un adjetivo cuando no lleva ninguna preposición detrás. En este caso, sí cambia de forma dependiendo del género y número del sustantivo al que nos referimos con ella. Os pongo unos ejemplos de ambos usos:
The word “junto” can function as an adverb when used with the prepositions “with” or “next to.” In this case, it does not change form. It can also be used as an adjective when it is not followed by a preposition. Then it does change form depending on the gender and number of the noun it modifies. Here are some examples of both uses:
1. “Junto” como adverbio:
1. “Junto” as an adverb:
Me gustaría pasar toda mi vida junto a ti.
I would like to spend my whole life next to you.
Este proyecto lo realicé junto con mis colegas.
I completed this project together with my colleagues.
Encontré a Merche junto a su prima en la cafetería.
I found Merche next to her cousin in the café.
Si vives junto con nosotros, tienes que respetar nuestras normas.
If you live together with us, you must respect our rules.
2. “Junto” como adjetivo:
2. “Junto” as an adjective:
Juntas, Alicia y Paula hicieron los recados mucho más rápido.
Together, Alicia and Paula ran the errands much faster.
Me encanta cuando nos reunimos en familia y salimos a comer todos juntos.
I love it when we get together as a family and all go out to eat together.
Aún no nos hemos casado, pero vamos a vivir juntos.
We are not married yet, but we are going to live together.
