¡Hola, buenos días! Bienvenidos al curso de español de LingTrio.
Hello! Welcome to the Spanish course from LingTrio.
Pues, ¡empezamos!
Today I will explain the use of the Present Subjunctive with the adverbs “when”, “while” and “although”, which will allow you to say many more things, and we will also see how the conjunction “but rather” is used. Are you ready? Then let’s begin!
EL USO DEL PRESENTE DE SUBJUNTIVO CON LOS ADVERBIOS “CUANDO”, “MIENTRAS”, “AUNQUE”
USE OF THE PRESENT SUBJUNCTIVE WITH THE ADVERBS “WHEN”, “WHILE”, “ALTHOUGH”
You already know how to use the adverbs “when”, “while” and “although” with verbs in the Present Indicative, for example:
When I go to the supermarket, I take a shopping cart.
While I cook, I usually listen to the news.
Aunque estoy cansada, voy a ir a baliar.
Although I am tired, I am going to dance.
You also know how to make sentences with these adverbs in the past:
Before, when I went to Madrid, I always stopped by the Casa del Libro bookstore.
While I was driving, I was thinking about this month’s expenses.
Although her son had a cold, she took him to the swimming pool.
Mirad:
And now we are going to make sentences with the same adverbs but with verbs in the Present Subjunctive. By doing this, we talk about things we think will happen in the future. Look:
When I learn the Spanish language, I will be able to read Delibes in the original.
That is, if I continue and in the future manage to master this language, I will read Delibes in Spanish.
Mientras sigas estudiando, te ayudaremos económicamente.
As long as you keep studying, we will help you financially.
That is, during the time he dedicates himself to studying, they will help him handle the expenses.
Even if it is very cold at night, we will still go out for a drink.
Here we suppose that with the arrival of night it will get colder, but it doesn’t matter to us, because we want to go out no matter what.
And I will give you more examples, just in case:
When I have children, I will travel with them all over the world.
Mientras tenga mi negocio, puedo estar bastante tranquilo.
As long as I have my business, I can be quite calm.
Even if I spend the whole day at the beach, I am not going to get a tan.
LA CONJUNCIÓN “SINO”
THE CONJUNCTION “BUT RATHER” (SINO)
Mirad:
Before starting to explain the use of the conjunction “but rather”, I want you to pay attention to how it is written, because it is written as one word, unlike “if not” which is used in another way. Look:
Si no me llamas tú, te llamo yo.
If you don’t call me, I will call you.
I don’t know if I won’t stay another night in this hotel.
Voy a comer tres galletas, si no más.
I am going to eat three cookies, if not more.
Well, the adversative conjunction “but rather” is something else, and it is used in different ways:
1. Para corregir una afirmación:
1. To correct a statement:
No soy médico, sino farmacéutico.
I am not a doctor, but rather a pharmacist.
No iré a comprar mañana, sino pasado.
I will not go shopping tomorrow, but rather the day after.
No voy a dormir, sino a ver una peli.
I am not going to sleep, but rather to watch a movie.
2. “No solo…, sino también”:
2. “Not only…, but also”:
I like not only rock music, but also classical.
You must add not only salt, but also pepper.
I have passed not only through Andorra, but also through France.
3. “Sino que” delante de los verbos:
3. “But rather that” before verbs:
No es rojo sino que es granate.
It is not red but rather burgundy.
Marco is not changing groups, but rather changing faculties.
No sólo viajo a México, sino que pienso quedarme allí a vivir.
I not only travel to Mexico, but I also plan to stay there and live.
