¡Hola, buenos días! Bienvenidos al curso de español de LingTrio.
Hello! Good morning! Welcome to the LingTrio Spanish course.
Hoy vamos a seguir hablando de las excepciones del subjuntivo y veremos más casos de alteraciones vocálicas. También os comentaré el uso del subjuntivo para expresar recomendaciones y órdenes. Y, por último, practicaremos frases que se forman con la conjunción “que” más el subjuntivo y nos sirvan para expresar deseo o mandato. ¿Preparados? Pues ¡vamos allá!
Today we will continue talking about exceptions in the subjunctive and will look at more cases of vowel changes. I will also explain how to use the subjunctive to express recommendations and orders. Finally, we will practice sentences formed with the conjunction “que” plus the subjunctive, which can be used to express wishes or commands. Ready? Then let’s go!
LAS EXCEPCIONES DEL SUBJUNTIVO: MÁS CASOS DE ALTERACIONES VOCÁLICAS
EXCEPTIONS IN THE SUBJUNCTIVE: MORE CASES OF VOWEL CHANGES
En la lección anterior hemos visto verbos en los que, al igual que en el Presente de Indicativo, aparecen diptongos en la raíz:
In the previous lesson, we looked at verbs that, just like in the Present Indicative, have diphthongs in the stem:
una -e pasa a ser -ie (perder - que yo pierda)
the vowel “e” changes to “ie” (to lose — that I lose)
una -o pasa a ser -ue (poder - que yo pueda)
the vowel “o” changes to “ue” (to be able to — that I can)
una -u pasa a ser -ue (jugar - que yo juegue)
the vowel “u” changes to “ue” (to play — that I play)
Pero también hay verbos que sufren un cambio vocálico, pero en vez de un diptongo aparece otra vocal. Mirad:
But there are also verbs in which the vowel changes, and instead of a diphthong, another vowel appears. For example:
Pedir: que yo pida que tú pidas que él, ella, usted pida que nosotros, nosotras pidamos que vosotros, vosotras pidáis que ellos, ellas, ustedes pidan
“to ask”: that I ask that you ask that he/she/you (formal) ask that we ask that you (plural) ask that they/you (plural formal) ask
Otros verbos básicos que tienen el mismo cambio de vocales son:
Other common verbs with the same vowel change are:
seguir (y también conseguir, perseguir) reír (y también sonreír) servir
“to follow” (and also “to get”, “to pursue”) “to laugh” (and also “to smile”) “to serve”
Vamos a ver sus conjugaciones en el Presente de Subjuntivo:
Let’s look at their conjugation in the Present Subjunctive:
Seguir: que yo siga que tú sigas que él, ella, usted siga que nosotros, nosotras sigamos que vosotros, vosotras sigáis que ellos, ellas, ustedes sigan
“to follow”: that I follow that you follow that he/she/you (formal) follow that we follow that you (plural) follow that they/you (plural formal) follow
Reír: que yo ría que tú rías que él, ella, usted ría que nosotros, nosotras riamos que vosotros, vosotras riáis que ellos, ellas, ustedes rían
“to laugh”: that I laugh that you laugh that he/she/you (formal) laugh that we laugh that you (plural) laugh that they/you (plural formal) laugh
Servir: que yo sirva que tú sirvas que él, ella, usted sirva que nosotros, nosotras sirvamos que vosotros, vosotras sirváis que ellos, ellas, ustedes sirvan
“to serve”: that I serve that you serve that he/she/you (formal) serve that we serve that you (plural) serve that they/you (plural formal) serve
Seguiremos viendo más excepciones de los verbos en el Presente de Subjuntivo en las próximas lecciones.
We will continue to look at more exceptions for verbs in the Present Subjunctive in the upcoming lessons.
EL USO DEL SUBJUNTIVO PARA EXPRESAR RECOMENDACIONES Y ÓRDENES
USING THE SUBJUNCTIVE TO EXPRESS RECOMMENDATIONS AND ORDERS
Si queremos dar un consejo o una orden, es posible que necesitemos poner un subjuntivo en la oración subordinada. Mientras tanto, en la oración principal, saldrá alguno de estos verbos:
If we want to give advice or an order, we may need to use the subjunctive in the subordinate clause. In the main clause, we will use one of the following verbs:
recomendar – aconsejar – ordenar – decir – exigir – pedir – sugerir
to recommend – to advise – to order – to tell – to demand – to ask – to suggest
Voy a poneros unos ejemplos:
Here are some examples:
Te recomiendo que descargues este programa.
I recommend that you download this program.
Os aconsejo que guardéis estos archivos en una carpeta.
I advise you to save these files in a folder.
Le ordeno que abandone la sala.
I order him to leave the room.
Te digo que no le hagas caso a Pedro.
I’m telling you not to pay attention to Pedro.
(“hacerle caso a alguien” - prestar atención a lo que dice)
(“to pay attention to someone” — to listen to and consider what they say)
Les exijo que terminen este trabajo hoy mismo.
I demand that they finish this work today.
Os pido que me ayudéis al menos un poco.
I ask you to help me at least a little.
Les sugiero que vean esta serie, está muy bien.
I suggest that you watch this series — it’s really good.
También es posible que tengamos que prohibirle algo a alguien, y entonces el verbo en la frase subordinada también irá en subjuntivo. Los verbos que utilizaremos serán los siguientes:
We might also need to forbid someone from doing something, and in that case, the verb in the subordinate clause will also be in the subjunctive. We will use the following verbs:
prohibir – permitir – dejar – impedir
to forbid – to allow – to permit – to prevent
Y vamos a hacer alguna que otra frase con ellos:
Here are some example sentences:
Te prohibo que andes solo por la noche.
I forbid you to walk alone at night.
No os permito que fuméis aquí.
I do not allow you to smoke here.
No les dejo que toquéis mis cosas.
I do not let you touch my things.
Le impido que vuelva a esta casa.
I prevent him from returning to this house.
“QUE + SUBJUNTIVO” PARA EXPRESAR DESEO O MANDATO
“QUE + SUBJUNCTIVE” TO EXPRESS WISH OR COMMAND
Para expresar deseo o pedirle algo a alguien podemos utilizar una oración simple empezada por la conjunción “que” seguida de un verbo en subjuntivo. Por ejemplo:
To express a wish or ask someone to do something, we can use a simple sentence starting with the conjunction “que” followed by a verb in the subjunctive. For example:
¡Que pasen mañana por la oficina!
May you come by the office tomorrow!
Que te mejores.
Get well soon.
(Se suele decir cuando alguien está enfermo para desearle que se recupere lo antes posible)
(This is often said when someone is sick, to wish them a speedy recovery)
¡Que disfrutéis mucho del viaje!
Enjoy your trip a lot!
¡Que la suerte te acompañe!
